A Cultural Celebration at The Peninsula Hong Kong

If you know me, you know how much I adore The Peninsula Hong Kong. With its iconic façade, impeccable service, and deep-rooted sense of history, it’s one of my all-time favorite hotels—and I’m thrilled to be returning this May. As if that weren’t enough, the timing couldn’t be more perfect. Coinciding with Art Basel Hong Kong, the hotel is unveiling its newest “Art in Resonance” exhibition, and it promises to be one of the most immersive and meaningful yet.

Launched in 2019, Art in Resonance is The Peninsula’s dynamic, forward-thinking art program dedicated to supporting emerging and mid-career artists. This year’s installation is not only visually captivating—it’s emotionally resonant, intellectually curious, and wonderfully interactive.

A Grand Debut for Three Visionary Artists

From now through May 2025, The Peninsula Hong Kong is transformed into a living gallery space. Three newly commissioned works by boundary-pushing artists—Phoebe Hui, Chris Cheung (aka h0nh1m), and Lin Fanglu—are on display throughout the hotel. This year, The Peninsula has also partnered with London’s esteemed Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A), elevating the exhibition to new global heights.

The first piece you’ll see upon arrival is Lunar Rainbow by multimedia artist Phoebe Hui. Stretching across 56 square meters of the hotel’s exterior, this celestial-inspired installation is Hui’s largest work to date. It weaves together centuries of lunar imagery, blending 17th-century moon drawings with today’s open-source visuals. The result is both poetic and powerful—an homage to resilience, hope, and the beauty of perspective. Stand in just the right spot, and the fragmented images align in perfect harmony. It’s nothing short of magical.

Inside The Lobby, textile artist Lin Fanglu’s She’s Bestowed Love radiates strength, femininity, and maternal energy through vibrant red sculptural forms. Inspired by the traditions of Yunnan’s Bai community and the mythic nurturing essence of Gaia, Lin’s work speaks to the shared experiences that shape womanhood. It’s a heartfelt tribute that will soon travel to the V&A in London for their “Dimensions: Chinese Contemporary Studio Crafts” exhibition this autumn.

And at The Verandah, prepare to be mesmerized by Chris Cheung’s The Flow Pavilion. Designed as a modern-day tea house within a Zen Garden, this immersive installation invites guests into a meditative “flow state.” A kinetic sphere—guided by the artist’s own brainwaves recorded during meditation—glides across a hand-tufted silk carpet. It’s serene, it’s futuristic, and it’s absolutely captivating.

Artful Indulgences: The Peninsula’s Signature Touch

Of course, The Peninsula Hong Kong doesn’t stop at showcasing the art—it weaves it beautifully into the guest experience. Think art-inspired Afternoon Tea at The Lobby with pastries that mirror the installations, delectable chocolate bonbons shaped after the artwork, and serene Matcha Mochi and Sencha Green Tea moments at The Verandah. Even the in-room amenities are thoughtfully curated, with postcards and sweet treats that echo the artistic themes.

For those wanting to dive deeper into the creative journey, the hotel’s “Art of Luxury” stay package offers a guided tour of the exhibition paired with the exquisite Afternoon Tea. And if you’re heading to Felix or The Bar, don’t miss the artistically inspired cocktails—each drink designed to reflect one of the installations. It’s sensory storytelling at its finest.

A Cultural Homecoming

As a longtime fan of The Peninsula brand and its deep commitment to cultural heritage, I’m especially moved by this year’s focus on celebrating innovation through tradition. This is more than just an art exhibition—it’s a bridge between history and the future, East and West, personal reflection and public engagement.

Whether you’re in town for Art Basel, staying as a guest, or simply stopping by for tea, don’t miss the chance to experience Art in Resonance firsthand. I know I’ll be taking it all in this May!
